Bhubaneswar, May 5: At least three people lost their lives in separate rain-related incidents triggered by Kalbaisakhi storms in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
In a tragic incident, two women were killed after a massive tree uprooted by strong winds collapsed on them at the Pedabayalu weekly market in Alluri district of Andhra Pradesh. The deceased have been identified as Chitamma Khara and Tilatama Khara, residents of Jarai village under Nandapur block in Koraput district. Both were vegetable vendors and had gone to the market to sell their produce when the sudden storm struck. They died on the spot after the tree fell on them.
Pottangi MLA reached the spot and urged the administration to provide immediate financial assistance to the bereaved families.
In another incident, a woman died after being struck by lightning in Odisha’s Koraput district. The deceased, identified as Kameya Sirika of Jhadipadar village under Narayanpatna block, was inside her house when lightning struck, leading to her instant death.
Authorities are assessing the damage caused by the storm, while concerns over safety during sudden weather disturbances have once again come to the fore.
