Journalism was his life, loneliness his reality-until ‘Raha’ found him

Bhubaneswar, Sept 1: He spent his youth chasing stories, helping people and living for journalism. But as the years passed, the veteran journalist found himself alone, without anyone to turn to.

Despite helping others whenever they needed him, he allegedly received little support when he himself needed it the most. His belongings were taken away and, according to those close to him, he was left feeling betrayed and forgotten.

Yet, he refused to give up.

One day, while going through a newspaper, he came across information about ‘Raha’, a project launched by Bou Foundation to support people in distress. He called its 24-hour helpline and shared the pain he had kept to himself for years.

He also sought full protection and support.

The Raha team, along with foundation founder Atish Mohanty, reached his residence. They eventually accepted him as a foster father, giving the lonely senior citizen something he had been missing for years — a family.

With support from Raha, Nihar began smiling again. He is now living peacefully at an ashram in Raghunathpur, where he has found care, companionship and a sense of belonging.

What about senior citizens who have nowhere to turn?

Nihar’s story also raises questions about the support system available to elderly people living alone.

The Odisha government has constituted a Senior Citizens Council for the welfare of senior citizens, with a provision for reconstitution every two years. However, according to the information provided, the council formed in July 2022 completed its term in July 2024, but has not yet been reconstituted, and no meeting has reportedly been held.

Demand for a 24-hour senior citizen helpline

The government operates the 14567 senior citizen helpline to provide assistance to elderly people. However, the service currently operates from 8 am to 8 pm, according to the information provided.

There have been demands to make the helpline available round the clock, particularly for senior citizens who live alone or may need urgent assistance outside regular hours.

For people like Nihar, timely support can mean much more than just a phone call. Sometimes, it can mean finding a place to belong again.
