Bhubaneswar, Oct 23: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday said that the well-marked low-pressure system over Bay of Bengal, which was earlier expected to intensify into a depression, is now likely to weaken into a low-pressure area within the next 12 hours.

Earlier, the regional weather office had predicted that the system would intensify into a depression. However, it is now expected to move northwestwards into interior Tamil Nadu and then west-northwest, with a likelihood of weakening into a low-pressure area within the next 12 hours.

The wind direction will change due to the low-pressure effect, leading to increased humidity. There is also a possibility of rain accompanied by thunder and lightning at several places across the state, said the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar.

Taking to its X handle, IMD informed, “The well-marked low pressure area over north coastal Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood moved west-northwestwards and lay over north interior Tamil Nadu & neighbourhood at 2330 hrs IST of yesterday, the 22nd October 2025. It is likely to continue to move west-northwestwards across north interior Tamil Nadu weakened into a low-pressure area during next 12 hours.”

According to today’s weather forecast, light to moderate rainfall is likely in the coastal and interior regions of South Odisha. The weather department has issued a yellow warning for 11 districts, predicting rain accompanied by thunder and lightning, along with wind speeds of 30 to 40 km/h.

The districts under yellow alert are Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Kalahandi, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Nuapada, Khordha, and Puri.
