Bhubaneswar/New Delhi, October 26: As Cyclone Montha intensifies over the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, the Indian Army has been put on high alert to handle any emergencies in the coastal regions. The cyclone is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast near Kakinada by Tuesday night, with wind speeds reaching 90-100 km/h and gusts up to 110 km/h.

On October 25, 2025, Cabinet Secretary T.V. Somanathan led a meeting of the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) to assess the preparedness for the approaching cyclone. Chief Secretaries from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Puducherry, and the Additional Chief Secretary of Odisha briefed the committee about the steps being taken to protect communities in the cyclone's expected path, along with the precautionary actions being implemented by local authorities.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that the depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal, which had been tracking westward, is expected to intensify into a deep depression and later into a full-blown cyclonic storm. The system is predicted to strengthen into a deep depression by October 26 (Sunday) and further develop into a cyclonic storm by October 27 (Monday), over the southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal.

According to the IMD's latest update, the depression was located 610 km west of Port Blair (Andaman & Nicobar Islands), 790 km southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 850 km south-southeast of Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 840 km southeast of Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), and 950 km south-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha) at 5:30 AM on October 26.

The weather system is forecast to move west-northwestward and intensify further into a cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours. As it progresses, the cyclone is expected to take a northwestward path, later shifting north-northwestward, and it could escalate into a severe cyclonic storm by the morning of October 28. The authorities are urging the public in vulnerable coastal areas to take all necessary precautions to stay safe as the storm approaches.
