Jindal Steel earns global praise for transforming workplace safety

Jindal Steel has secured global recognition by winning the 2026 Steelie Award for Excellence in People during an industry gathering in New Delhi. Organised by the World Steel Association, this high-profile event celebrates member companies demonstrating exceptional operational achievements. Industrial safety remains a critical focus across the global manufacturing sector, requiring constant innovation to protect high-risk frontline workers. The judging panel selected the Indian manufacturer over finalists like Tata Steel, InfraBuild, China Baowu, and USIMINAS for its targeted initiative known as Dakshata Engineering Safety.

Corporate safety training frequently tracks basic attendance rather than true field readiness. Dakshata resolves this gap by strictly evaluating the exact knowledge, emergency responses, and practical skills required for every single duty position. By identifying specific individual shortcomings, the system delivers highly targeted learning before reassessing each worker. Management then uses these precise proficiency results to guide daily staff deployment and supervision.

This targeted analytical model has already evaluated more than 27,100 executives and non-executive staff members across six different facilities. Initial large-scale testing of 11,639 non-executives revealed an average knowledge rating of 0.81, while practical application scores lagged at 0.71. To close this operational gap, 69 certified trainers successfully delivered 372 health and safety modules, achieving a 96 per cent completion rate. Furthermore, the company logged 16,539 formal assessments for incoming personnel.

Digital transformation actively supports these capability improvements at the Raipur Machinery Division. The facility relies on digital risk analytics, engineered hazard reduction, access controls, and artificial intelligence for continuous workplace monitoring. Through the 2025–26 financial year, the location recorded 17,752 detailed observations. Crews successfully mechanised or completely removed 379 highly dangerous tasks. Consequently, the Raipur site reduced its emergency response time by 15 per cent to just 5.25 minutes and maintained a perfect 0.00 lost time injury frequency rate.
