New Delhi, September 3: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren met Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, characterizing the meeting as a "courtesy visit." After the meeting, Soren indicated that discussions would soon begin regarding the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Soren stated, "I had planned this meeting for a while. It was a courtesy visit, and we will now start discussions about the Jharkhand Assembly Elections. Everything is going smoothly, and we are committed to running the government effectively and securing victory in the upcoming elections."
On Monday, Soren had visited the shrine of Sufi saint Khwaja Gareeb Nawaz in Ajmer, Rajasthan, where he prayed for the prosperity of his state and the nation.
In recent political developments, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) senior leader and former Chief Minister Champai Soren joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on August 30. Soren expressed his support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Amit Shah upon joining the BJP.
Jharkhand is expected to hold elections for its 81-member Legislative Assembly later this year, with the current government's term concluding in 2024. The Election Commission of India has yet to announce the election dates. In the 2020 Assembly elections, the JMM won 30 seats, the Congress secured 16 seats, and in the most recent Lok Sabha elections, the BJP emerged with the highest number of seats at 8, while the JMM and Congress won 3 and 2 seats, respectively.
