Malkangiri, Aug 21:A major road accident was narrowly averted on Thursday when a Commander jeep carrying over 25 passengers skidded off the Bayapada Ghat and plunged into a gorge in Odisha’s Malkangiri district. The incident occurred while the vehicle was en route to the weekly market at Kudumulugumma.
Sources said the passengers, hailing from Amlibeda village under Nakamamudi Panchayat in Korukonda Block, were travelling to Kudumulugumma when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle on the ghat road. The jeep veered off the path and fell into the gorge, injuring several passengers.
Local authorities confirmed that while some sustained injuries, many of the passengers had a narrow escape. Immediate rescue operations were launched by the fire brigade team from Kudumulugumma, who rushed to the spot upon receiving the alert.
As of the latest reports, rescue efforts are underway, and some passengers are believed to be still trapped inside the mangled vehicle. Further details are awaited.
