Mumbai, Aug 21: After Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar, another Indian is tipped to hold a top position in the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Though an official word of confirmation was still awaited, but it is almost certain that Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah is likely to replace the incumbent Greg Barclay as the next ICC chairman.
Barclay has expressed his unwillingness to continue as the ICC Chairman for a third term on Tuesday. His tenure comes to an end on November 30 this year..
Sources revealed that Barclay opted out of a third term after being informed of Shah's intention to head the ICC. Further it is learnt that Shah has the support of two other powerful cricket boards England and Australia.
Earlier, four Indians held top positions in the ICC. Jagmohan Dalmiya (1997 to 2000), Sharad Pawar (2010-2012) served as ICC Presidents. Similarly, N Srinivasan (2014 to 2015) and Shashank Manohar (2015 to 2020) held the office of the ICC chairmen.
If Shah holds the ICC chairman's post, he will be the third Indian to become ICC chairman, with Srinivasan and Manohar having served at the same capacity earlier.
As per ICC norms, if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held. The term of the new ICC chairman starts December 1 next.
If Shah becomes the ICC chairman, at 35, he will become the youngest chairman in the history of the ICC. Jay Shah is also the son of India's home minister Amit Shah.
