Landmark summit to boost trade and defence cooperation ties

New Delhi: The national capital is prepared to roll out the red carpet for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who arrives today for a high-stakes two-day tour. This diplomatic event marks the 23rd annual bilateral summit and celebrates the 25th anniversary of the strategic partnership between the two nations. Significantly, this is the Russian leader's first trip to Indian soil since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

The Putin India visit officially begins on the evening of December 4. Upon his arrival, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to host the President for an exclusive private dinner at his official residence, setting the tone for the formal engagements to follow.

The main itinerary kicks off on Thursday morning with a grand ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan, followed by a tri-service guard of honour. After paying his respects at Rajghat, President Putin will engage in comprehensive formal talks with PM Modi at Hyderabad House. Moscow has dispatched a heavyweight delegation to accompany the President, including seven senior ministers overseeing portfolios such as defence, finance, agriculture, and energy, alongside the Central Bank Governor.

Economic diplomacy is expected to take center stage during the discussions. While bilateral trade has surged by 12% to reach USD 63.6 billion, addressing the widening trade deficit remains a priority. Both leaders are poised to sign a "Program for the Development of Strategic Areas of Russian-Indian Economic Cooperation" extending through 2030. This roadmap aims to shield bilateral transactions from external pressures and boost cooperation in health, agriculture, and energy.

Defence collaboration remains a cornerstone of the alliance. The summit will likely review updates on the S-400 missile system procurement and the development of advanced, lighter versions of the BrahMos missiles. Additionally, the leaders will jointly address the India-Russia Business Forum at Bharat Mandapam to highlight investment opportunities.

The historic visit will conclude on the evening of December 5 with a state banquet hosted by President Droupadi Murmu, after which the Russian delegation will depart.
