Mayurbhanj, Jan 29: A tragic incident driven by blind belief and superstition unfolded in Mayurbhanj district, where a man allegedly murdered his mother under the suspicion that she was involved in witchcraft. The accused, Tapan Barik (35), has been arrested in connection with the crime.
Tapan, a resident of Kalarafulia village under the Betnoti police jurisdiction, reportedly committed the heinous act after a prolonged period of familial tension. He believed that his mother, Raimani Singh (48), was practicing witchcraft, which he blamed for his wife’s multiple miscarriages. Following frequent domestic disputes and mental harassment, Tapan’s wife had left him two months ago, choosing to live separately.
According to villagers, Tapan had been exhibiting abnormal behavior in recent months, often accusing his mother of being the cause of his personal misfortunes. On the fateful day, a heated argument broke out between mother and son. In a fit of rage, Tapan attacked his mother with a sharp cutting weapon, killing her instantly.
Betnoti police were alerted and quickly arrived at the scene. They arrested Tapan and seized the murder weapon. The body of the deceased has been sent for post-mortem examination at the district headquarters hospital. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
Police officials confirmed that the incident took place in the early hours of the morning. The investigation is ongoing to determine the exact sequence of events and whether there were any previous complaints or warning signs. Authorities are also looking into the role of superstition and potential mental health issues that may have contributed to the crime.
This incident has once again drawn attention to the persistent problem of blind belief and superstition in rural areas, which often lead to tragic outcomes. Locals have demanded strict legal action against the accused and greater awareness campaigns to tackle such harmful practices.
