European dignitaries to attend parade and discuss trade deals

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen touched down in New Delhi on Saturday, marking the beginning of a significant state visit. She is set to be the Chief Guest at India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations, a gesture that underscores the deepening diplomatic and economic ties between New Delhi and the European Union.

Upon her arrival at the airport, the dignitary was warmly received by Jitin Prasada, the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry. This visit is particularly historic as it will see two top European leaders sharing the stage; European Council President António Luís Santos da Costa is also scheduled to join as a Chief Guest for the grand parade on Kartavya Path this Monday.

The timing of this visit is crucial for international relations. Following the festivities on January 26, the leaders will participate in the 16th India-EU Summit scheduled for Tuesday. High on the agenda is the potential finalization of a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which officials have optimistically dubbed the "mother of all deals." This agreement aims to unlock massive economic potential between the two democratic powerhouses.

During her stay, von der Leyen will engage in high-level delegation talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and meet President Droupadi Murmu. The discussions are expected to cover strategic partnerships, green energy transitions, and global security challenges. Her arrival sets the stage for a week of celebration and intense diplomatic activity, highlighting India's growing influence on the global stage.
