New Delhi, Aug 22: A potential security breach at Parliament was thwarted on Friday morning when security personnel apprehended an intruder who had scaled a tree and climbed the wall to gain access to the complex.
According to sources, the man, who identity has not been disclosed yet, jumped over the wall between TKR 2 and the North Utility gate, gaining entry into the Parliament complex.
Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at Parliament swiftly apprehended the intruder, and are currently questioning him, said sources.
The sources added that the man reached the Garuda gate of the new Parliament building after jumping over the wall from the Rail Bhawan side.
Notably, on December 13, 2001, terrorists from Pakistan-based groups Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) carried out a deadly attack on the old Parliament building, resulting in the deaths of fourteen people, including five terrorists.
Fast forward to December 2023, on the 22nd anniversary of the 2001 attack, two individuals breached the Lok Sabha chamber during Zero Hour, jumping from the visitors' gallery and releasing yellow gas from canisters.
They were heard shouting anti-government slogans. Meanwhile, outside the Parliament complex, two others were seen using similar canisters to release colored smoke while chanting slogans. Six people were arrested in connection with the incident.
