Dhaka, Aug 5: Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announced today the formation of an interim government with the participation of all parties, following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and departure to a “safer place.”
In a national address, General Waker-Uz-Zaman stated, “After holding a fruitful discussion with all political parties, we have decided to form an interim government. We will speak with President Mohammed Shahabuddin now to resolve the situation,” as reported by the Dhaka Tribune. He called for an end to all violence in the name of protests and assured that the new government will ensure justice for the deaths that occurred during the Anti-Discriminatory Student Movement.
Amid a mass uprising that resulted in several hundred deaths, Prime Minister Hasina submitted her resignation to President Md Shahabuddin. Reports indicate that she left the country with her sister Sheikh Rehana on Monday afternoon aboard a military helicopter bound for India. Thousands of people took to the streets, celebrating the end of the tenure of the country’s longest-serving prime minister.
