Bhubaneswar, May 12: Odisha continued to reel under an intense heatwave, with Sambalpur experiencing the hottest place in the state, recording a blistering 42.9°C on Sunday.
A total of 17 cities across the state saw temperatures soar past the 40°C mark.
Weather scientist Umasankar Das shared the alarming figures on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter), offering a detailed breakdown of the heatwave’s impact.
According to his update, Hirakud recorded 42.4°C, while Jharsuguda and Balangir reported 42.2°C each. Boudh and Titilagarh also endured high temperatures at 42°C. Angul registered 41.9°C, followed by Bhawanipatna at 41.6°C. Sundargarh and Sonepur both touched 41.5°C, while Paralakhemundi and Bargarh recorded 41.2°C each. Nuapada followed with 41.0°C.
Other towns weren’t spared either—Rourkela and Dhenkanal recorded 40.6°C and 40.3°C, respectively.
The state capital, Bhubaneswar, experienced sweltering conditions at 40.4°C, while Cuttack too reported a high of 40°C.
With temperatures continuing to climb, the India Meteorological Department has urged citizens to take necessary precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
