New Delhi, Dec 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday offered strong support for renewed initiatives to halt the fighting in Ukraine, telling Russian President Vladimir Putin that India will fully back every genuine attempt to achieve a peaceful resolution.

The Ukraine conflict was a central topic during the annual summit between the two leaders. The meeting sought to reinforce a partnership that has endured for nearly 80 years, even as global tensions and geopolitical divides have grown sharper.

In his televised opening remarks, Modi emphasized that India is not “neutral” but firmly aligned with efforts to restore peace.

He noted that both sides have remained in constant communication since the conflict began. Modi described trust as a key foundation of their long-standing relationship.

“We must collectively find a path toward peace. I appreciate the most recent initiatives, and I believe the world is ready for a turn toward stability,” he said.

Repeating his position, Modi stressed that India consistently supports every credible peace effort and intends to contribute actively to any initiative that moves the situation toward reconciliation.

Putin, in response, stated that Russia is aiming for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

The Russian leader arrived on Thursday evening to a ceremonial welcome. This marks his first visit to India in four years and his first trip there since the Ukraine war began in February 2022.
