India's toll plaza revenue surpasses Rs 70,000 cr in 2024

New Delhi, Jan 2: India’s toll plaza collections have crossed the Rs 70,000 crore mark in 2024, reflecting a significant surge in revenue driven by the expansion of toll plazas and the country’s improving economic conditions.
The growth in daily toll collections can be attributed to several factors, including the establishment of new toll plazas across the nation and an increase in both commercial and personal vehicle traffic.
The introduction of FASTag, a digital toll collection system, has played a key role in streamlining the toll process, reducing wait times, and ensuring faster, more efficient movement of vehicles.
This technological advancement has contributed significantly to the rise in toll revenue, benefiting both commuters and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
With the increased toll income, the NHAI plans to reinvest the funds into the country’s road infrastructure, focusing on enhancing road quality, safety, and expanding the highway network.
Additionally, the surge in toll collections is helping NHAI address its massive debt, which currently stands at ₹3.2 trillion. The authority aims to reduce this debt to ₹3 trillion by the end of fiscal year 2025, further improving financial sustainability.
This boost in toll revenue signals not only the economic growth of India but also the government’s ongoing efforts to upgrade the road transport system, thereby improving travel efficiency and road safety across the country.
