US Releases Footage of Nicolas Maduro in Handcuffs as Venezuela Names Acting President

United States authorities have released dramatic footage confirming the detention of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. The picture showcases what is widely known as a "perp-walk," depicting the captured leader in handcuffs as law enforcement agents were escorted him into custody. Following his arrest, reports indicate he is being transferred to the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in New York City.

MDC Brooklyn has a notorious reputation. Often described as having "horrifying" conditions, the facility is known for issues ranging from chronic understaffing and power outages to inmate violence. Originally built in the 1990s to alleviate overcrowding, this prison has housed several high-profile figures. Notable past inmates include R. Kelly, Ghislaine Maxwell, and cryptocurrency founder Sam Bankman-Fried. Recently, suspected cartel leader Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada Garcia was also detained there while awaiting trial.

Back in Venezuela, the political landscape shifted rapidly following the abduction of Maduro and his wife. The country’s Supreme Court issued an order Saturday night instructing Vice President Delcy Rodriguez to take over the duties of acting president. The court ruled that Maduro is currently in a state of "material and temporary impossibility" to perform his functions.

Reaction to the arrest has been mixed. While Venezuela's opposition was seen celebrating, the path forward for the country remains complex. President Donald Trump addressed the situation in a press conference, expressing skepticism about opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. Despite Machado calling for Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia to be installed as president—a move supported by most Western governments—Trump suggested he might partner with Maduro loyalist Delcy Rodriguez instead. He noted that while Machado is a "very nice woman," she lacks the necessary support and respect within Venezuela to lead effectively.
