Indian men defend hockey gold securing LA 28 qualification

Indian men’s hockey players defended their Asian Games title successfully on Saturday, crushing Malaysia 5-1 in Nagoya to secure direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Securing this victory marks India’s fifth men's hockey gold medal at the Asian Games. Both the men’s and women’s squads stand at the podium with gold medals together for the first time in tournament history. India's women defeated China earlier to end a 44-year title drought. Capturing their 21st overall gold in Aichi-Nagoya pushed India to fourth place in the overall medal tally, overtaking Uzbekistan. Historically, Indian hockey has dominated regional tournaments, but defending this specific title proves their sustained global momentum heading into the next Olympic cycle.

Captain Harmanpreet Singh opened the scoring early in the first quarter with a penalty corner conversion. Malaysia struck back quickly, equalizing within three minutes. India regained control during the second quarter when Shilanand Lakra earned a penalty corner. Hardik Singh stopped the injection, allowing Jugraj to fire the ball into the net. Moments later, a penalty corner variation struck a Malaysian defender on the post. Hardik Singh stepped up for the resulting penalty stroke, sliding it past the goalkeeper to make it 3-1.

Dominance continued in the final 15 minutes. Lakra extended the lead to 4-1, effectively shutting down any chance of a Malaysian comeback. Harmanpreet finished the job with his second drag-flick goal of the match, cementing the final 5-1 scoreline. Reaching this final required intense mental toughness, as the team previously edged past arch-rivals Pakistan 4-3 in a highly competitive semifinal clash.
