Indian crew members moved to Netherlands after hantavirus scare on MV Hondius cruise

Indian nationals remain healthy following precautionary cruise ship evacuation.

Two Indian crew members from the Dutch-flagged cruise vessel MV Hondius have been safely relocated to the Netherlands for medical observation. This move follows a localized health alert involving a potential hantavirus outbreak while the ship was positioned near Spain's Canary Islands. According to a statement from the Indian Embassy in Madrid, both individuals are currently asymptomatic and show no signs of illness.

Spanish health authorities managed the disembarkation of approximately 150 people after the vessel anchored near Tenerife. While the situation prompted international concern, officials emphasise that the evacuation to the Netherlands serves as a standard safety protocol. Hantavirus typically spreads through contact with rodents and can lead to respiratory complications, though medical experts suggest the current risk to the general public in India remains negligible.

Health Minister Mónica García confirmed that the docking operation succeeded despite logistical hurdles. While Spanish nationals were the first to leave, international passengers from Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands are also returning home under supervised conditions. Indian diplomats continue to coordinate with European agencies to ensure the welfare of the evacuated crew.
