India Calls on Pakistan to End Human Rights Abuses in Occupied Territories

India has delivered a sharp rebuke to Pakistan at the United Nations. New Delhi called on Islamabad to immediately halt severe human rights violations in the territories under its illegal occupation. This strong statement came just days after violent protests shook Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (POK), leaving numerous civilians dead and injured. India's Permanent Representative used the platform to forcefully counter Pakistan's attempt to raise the Kashmir issue, highlighting the stark contrast between democratic rights in Jammu and Kashmir and the situation in Pakistan.

Contrasting Realities Jammu and Kashmir vs. Pakistan

Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish firmly rejected Pakistan's narrative. He reiterated India's long-standing position that Jammu and Kashmir "has been, is, and will always be" an integral part of India. He pointed out that the people of Jammu and Kashmir actively exercise their fundamental rights within India's established democratic framework. He then drew a sharp contrast, stating that concepts like fundamental rights and democracy are "alien" to Pakistan.

Harish highlighted Pakistan's history of fragile democracy, heavily influenced by its powerful military. He noted the country's long periods under direct military rule and the fact that no elected prime minister has ever completed a full term. This context served to undermine Pakistan's credibility when raising issues of rights and governance.

Spotlight on POK Protests and Repression

India's representative directly addressed the recent violent unrest in POK. "We call upon Pakistan to end the grave and ongoing human rights violations in the areas illegally occupied by it," Harish stated. He described the population in these areas as being in "open revolt against Pakistan’s military occupation, repression, brutality and illegal exploitation of resources."

These remarks referred to the unprecedented protests that erupted in POK earlier in October. Initially focused on civic issues, the agitation quickly grew into a broader movement against military excesses. The region was brought to a standstill for over ten days as protesters clashed violently with security forces, resulting in at least 12 civilian deaths. India's statement at the UN aimed to turn the international focus onto these recent events and Pakistan's internal challenges.

The Indian envoy concluded by stressing the need for comprehensive UN reform. He cautioned against using the international body for "divisive politics and parochial purposes," calling the current structure outdated.
