Bhubaneswar, Sep 29: INDIA bloc on Tuesday announced to observe Odisha bandh on October 8 to demand the repeal of the new mining law and two other issues as the members of the alliance staged a demonstration near Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s residence here.

Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Bhakta Charan Das announced a statewide Odisha bandh on October 8 to protest the controversial Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) (MMDR) Amendment Act.
The other two demands are the resignation of School & Mass Education Minister Nityanand Gond over textbook error issue and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over Special Intensive Revision (SIR) issue.
“This protest will continue. On October 8, following the protest in Kendujhar, an Odisha bandh will be observed. From this platform, I appeal to the people of Odisha. On behalf of the INDIA bloc, I appeal to the CPI, CPI(M), Samajwadi Party (SP) and other parties to extend their support to the bandh,” Das said.
Hundreds of workers and leaders of INDIA bloc such as the Congress, CPI(M), CPI, CPI(ML) Liberation, Forward Bloc, NCP, Samajwadi Party and RJD took part in a rally as the members of the alliance staged a demonstration near Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s residence here.

The protesters had earlier planned to gherao the Odisha Assembly but shifted their focus to the Chief Minister’s residence after the Monsoon Session was adjourned sine die a day earlier.
“BJP can adjourn the Assembly but it cannot silence our voice. Today, we marched to CM Mohan Majhi’s official residence demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar and Education Minister Nityanand Gond. We will not let our rights be compromised by the MMDR Act and Vote Chori,” said Das.
