India bats first in Colombo as Saransh Jain debuts
Opting to bat first, Indian captain Shubman Gill won the coin toss against Sri Lanka in the second Test at Colombo's Sinhalese Sports Club. Spin all-rounder Saransh Jain proudly received his maiden Test cap for India before the match. He steps in for Kuldeep Yadav, who misses the playing eleven because of a viral infection. However, Kuldeep remains available as a concussion substitute if required.
Gill noted that the Colombo surface looks significantly harder and better than the track in Galle. During the series opener, the Galle pitch slowed down considerably as the game progressed. India leads this two-match series 1-0 following a 165-run victory in Galle. That opening win featured remarkable displays from Devdutt Padikkal, who scored 167 and 44, and Manav Suthar, who claimed a ten-wicket match haul. Indian cricket has often relied on strong spin attacks in subcontinental conditions, making these early pitch assessments vital for match strategy.
Captain Perspectives on Strategy
Reflecting on their previous performance, Gill rated the Galle victory a nine out of ten. He acknowledged that playing dominant cricket over five days remains incredibly difficult, leaving some room for improvement. The team expects this new wicket to favour batters heavily for the first few days before offering gradual turn later in the match.
Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva remained optimistic despite losing the toss. He hopes the morning cloud cover will help his bowlers strike early and build pressure. Sri Lanka also introduced fresh talent, with Kamil Mishara making his Test debut today. Furthermore, Pasindu Sooriyabandara joins the team, replacing Dinesh Chandimal who suffered an injury during the previous match. Both teams aim to capitalize on these new lineup changes, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant looking to build a strong total early on.
