India successfully test-fires its first fully indigenised Sher rifle
Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited has successfully manufactured and test-fired India's first completely indigenised AK-203 assault rifle at the Korwa ordnance facility in Amethi. Named 'Sher', this weapon represents complete end-to-end local manufacturing, with every single component and raw material sourced exclusively from domestic industry. Maj Gen S K Sharma, CEO and MD of the joint venture, confirmed that the prototype recently cleared initial burst firing tests with highly encouraging results.
Output Scaling and Military Trials
This development marks a significant shift in national defence procurement, reducing reliance on foreign arms imports that have historically shaped military supply chains in the region. The production line will soon increase its output to build one rifle every 100 seconds, translating to an impressive capacity of roughly 12,000 units monthly. By optimising these manufacturing processes, the facility plans to advance the overall delivery timeline. This means the Indian Army will receive its order of approximately six lakh rifles nearly a year earlier than previously projected. Military personnel will thoroughly evaluate the requisite number of fully localized prototypes during extensive field trials scheduled for September 2026.
Combat Capabilities and Upgrades
The modern, gas-operated 7.62x39mm firearm can consistently fire 700 rounds per minute and boasts an effective targeting range of up to 800 metres. It combines legendary Kalashnikov reliability with modern ergonomics and modular accessory rails built specifically for demanding contemporary combat environments. Indian armed forces are currently inducting these new weapons to completely replace their ageing INSAS rifles, which have served as standard issue for several decades. The new Sher assault rifle offers superior lethality, flawless operational reliability, and noticeably better handling for soldiers who frequently operate across diverse and rugged border terrains.
