Bhubaneswar, June 27: A young Girl sustained critical burn injuries after she was allegedly set on fire by her boyfriend in Odisha's Sundargarh district late Thursday night. The accused has been arrested by the police.

The incident took place at Jaratoli village under Santoshpur Panchayat in Bishra block., Sundargah.

According to preliminary reports, the accused allegedly poured petrol into the victim's room through a window using a pipe while she was asleep and then set her on fire.

The victim, identified as Anju Toppo, suffered nearly 80 percent burn injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in Rourkela, where she remains in critical condition.

Anju's father is a Samiti member of Santoshpur Panchayat. Her family has alleged that the attack was carried out by her boyfriend, Rajat, following a dispute related to their relationship. They lodged a complaint with the local police soon after the incident.

Police, along with a scientific investigation team, visited the crime scene and launched an investigation. Officials are examining all possible angles, including whether the attempted murder was motivated by a personal relationship or any other reason.

The accused, Rajat, was later arrested from Lathikata. According to the preliminary investigation, the attack appears to have stemmed from a one-sided love affair, police said.
