Woman killed during protest at husband’s house in Odisha’s Berhampur

Berhampur, May 6: A tragic incident linked to a social media relationship has come to light from Odisha’s Hinjili area, where a woman was allegedly killed while staging a protest in front of her husband’s house.

The deceased, a resident of Agasthi Nuagaon under Rambha police limits, had reportedly fallen in love with a youth from K. Kharida village through social media around three years ago. The relationship later culminated in a temple marriage. The couple had a three-year-old daughter, and the woman was also six months pregnant.

According to sources, the couple had been living in a rented house in Puri for the past six months. About 15 days ago, the husband allegedly abandoned her at Berhampur railway station on the pretext of introducing her to his family.

After failing to get justice despite approaching the police, the woman began a sit-in protest in front of her husband’s house on Monday.

However, the protest turned fatal on Tuesday when the husband’s younger brother allegedly attacked her with a sharp weapon, leading to her death on the spot.

Police rushed to the scene after receiving information, seized the body, and arrested the accused. A detailed investigation into the incident is currently underway.

Reports indicate that the woman had no immediate family support and was living in distress prior to the incident.
