Kolkata, June 30: The West Bengal government is considering adopting the Odisha model to continue serving eggs in school midday meals amid controversy over assigning ISKCON to prepare meals in Kolkata schools.
Under the proposal, ISKCON would provide vegetarian meals, while schools would receive separate funds to buy and distribute eggs.
The move follows criticism after ISKCON clarified that its meals would not include eggs, which are currently served once a week.
A meeting is expected this week to finalise the revised plan.
The decision has sparked political debate. BJP leader Amit Malviya defended ISKCON, saying its vegetarian meals are nutritious and hygienic. Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra opposed removing eggs, arguing they are an important source of protein for children from low-income families.
Officials believe the Odisha model, where schools procure eggs separately while vegetarian meals are supplied by the implementing agency, could offer a practical solution.
