Haridwar, Mar 21: The Uttarakhand government has stepped up development initiatives in Haridwar, with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami instructing officials to complete all permanent infrastructure projects by October 2026 in preparation for the Kumbh Mela 2027.
The state is prioritising rapid infrastructure enhancement, expansion of facilities for pilgrims, and the implementation of modern surveillance and control systems to ensure security during the mega event. Key projects are being fast-tracked, including the construction of a new Command and Control Centre (CCR-2) and two new bridges over the Sukhi River and Mayapur escape channel.
During his visit to Haridwar last Monday, CM Dhami reviewed Kumbh Mela preparations and directed authorities to ensure the convenience, accessibility, and safety of pilgrims, stressing that the government would leave no stone unturned in organising the event. He also urged that construction work for CCR-2 and the two bridges begin immediately. Approvals for all three projects have now been issued at the government level.
The ₹50.27 crore CCR-2 building project will be located near the existing Mela Control Building and equipped with advanced technology. It will feature a helipad for emergency helicopter operations, enabling effective crowd management and evacuation during large gatherings. Of the total project cost, ₹20.11 crore has already been released as the first instalment. The centre will not only manage the Kumbh Mela but also other major bathing festivals and the Kanwar Yatra.
Additionally, a 44.80-metre-long double-lane cable net arch bridge will be constructed over the Sukhi River, replacing the existing causeway leading to the Kankhal cremation ground. The bridge, costing ₹13.21 crore with ₹5.28 crore released as the first instalment, will include pedestrian footpaths and approach roads on both sides, ensuring safe passage during high water levels in the monsoon season.
A 60-metre span bow-string steel girder double-lane bridge over the Mayapur escape channel has also been approved. Connecting the Dakshdweep parking area with Bairagi Camp, the ₹12.46 crore project (₹4.98 crore released as the first instalment) will ease crowd movement and improve overall safety. Approach roads will be constructed at both ends of the bridge.
Mela Officer Sonika described these projects as critical for the smooth and secure conduct of Kumbh Mela 2027. She has directed executing agencies to commence work immediately, maintain high-quality standards, and ensure timely completion. Continuous monitoring, mandatory testing, and safety inspections, including load testing of the bridges, have been emphasised to guarantee their full and safe utilisation during the event.
