Bhubaneswar, Mar 31: As Odisha celebrates the 90th anniversary of Utkal Divas on April 1, the occasion offers a moment to reflect on the remarkable journey of Odisha from its formation in 1936 to its present-day transformation in 2026. What began as a historic movement to protect the Odia language and identity has today evolved into a celebration of progress, culture, and aspirations.
Odisha was formed as a separate province on April 1, 1936, after a long struggle led by prominent leaders, including Madhusudan Das and Gopabandhu Das. Their vision was to unite Odia-speaking regions under one administrative unit, ensuring the preservation of language, culture, and heritage.
A state born out of struggle
At the time of its formation, Odisha was largely rural and economically backward. Infrastructure was minimal, and access to education and healthcare was limited across many regions.
Historians note that the early years of Utkal Divas celebrations were simple but deeply emotional, symbolising the success of a long social and political movement.
One of the local historian said, “Formation of Odisha in 1936 was not just an administrative decision. It was the result of decades of struggle by intellectuals and social reformers who wanted to protect the Odia language and identity.”
During that period, the focus was primarily on social development, literacy and strengthening cultural unity among the people.
Ninety years later, Odisha has undergone significant transformation. The capital city Bhubaneswar has emerged as a major education and technology hub, while the state has gained national recognition for governance and disaster management.
Large-scale infrastructure projects, expansion of higher education institutions, industrial growth and tourism development have reshaped the state’s landscape over the decades.
Residents say the meaning of Utkal Divas has also evolved with time.
College student Sasmita Nayak said,
“For our generation, Utkal Divas is about pride in being Odia and also about how far the state has progressed. We celebrate our culture, language and achievements together.”
Similarly, senior citizen and retired teacher Raghunath Das recalled how celebrations used to be earlier.
“Earlier, Utkal Divas programmes were limited to schools and cultural organisations. Today, the scale of celebration has increased across the state, and young people are actively participating.”
Changing face of celebrations
In 2026, Utkal Divas is marked with grand cultural programmes, parades, exhibitions, and community events across districts. Social media campaigns and youth-led initiatives have also become part of the celebrations, reflecting the changing times.
From traditional Odissi dance performances to modern digital storytelling about Odisha’s heritage, the event now showcases both history and progress.
Observers believe that while Odisha has achieved significant milestones over the past nine decades, the state still has ambitions for further growth in employment, education and innovation.
As people across the state celebrate the occasion, the spirit of unity and pride that led to the creation of Odisha in 1936 continues to inspire a new generation in 2026.Utkal Divas, therefore, stands not only as a reminder of the past but also as a symbol of Odisha’s journey towards a stronger future.
