Bhubaneswar, Ap 18: The historic 13 columns of Shishupalgarh, a significant archaeological site, are reportedly at risk, raising concerns among historians and local residents. Originally consisting of 16 columns, three of them have already sunk into the ground, while several others are showing signs of structural damage. Heavy rainfall is further exacerbating the situation, creating waterlogging around the bases of the remaining columns and threatening their stability.

Dr. B.B. Lal, a distinguished archaeologist, excavated Shishupalgarh in 1948 and documented these invaluable relics, noting that the columns, constructed on single stone slabs, measured approximately 21 feet in height and 2.5 feet in diameter. Historically, the columns were believed to support a large chariot assembly area covering 7,200 square feet. Local folklore also associates some of the columns with ancient punitive practices, hence the popular reference as “execution pillars.”

Despite their historical significance, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has reportedly not taken adequate measures for their preservation. Allegations have emerged that one of the columns was damaged by earthmoving activities in recent years. Currently, ongoing construction and land development projects in the vicinity have further heightened fears that the remaining columns could collapse, particularly during monsoon seasons.

Local heritage enthusiasts have expressed alarm over the deteriorating condition of Shishupalgarh, urging authorities to implement immediate conservation and protective measures. Without intervention, this ancient site risks losing a significant portion of its historical legacy, which has stood as a silent witness to Odisha’s ancient civilization for over two millennia.
