Indian jumper Sarvesh Kushare earns historic Commonwealth Games silver

Indian athlete Sarvesh Kushare etched his name into history by capturing second place in men's high jump at Glasgow. Clearing a height of 2.25 metres during the 2026 Commonwealth Games finals earned him this landmark medal. He now holds the distinction of being the first Indian to finish second in this specific event.

Historically, Indian athletes have struggled to reach the podium in field events like the high jump on the global stage, making this achievement particularly significant for the nation's sporting trajectory. Kushare battled fiercely against Jamaica's Romaine Beckford. Both athletes successfully cleared the 2.25m mark. Beckford ultimately claimed gold because he cleared the height on his first try. Kushare needed three attempts to reach the same height, missing out on the top spot after three unsuccessful tries at 2.28m. Kimani Jack from England took third place with a 2.20m effort.

Consistent Form Delivers Success

Kushare entered these games riding high on excellent momentum. He had just set a national record of 2.31m at the National Inter-State Championships last month. He easily navigated the opening jumps in Scotland before securing his spot on the podium. Other Indian competitors faced mixed results. Aadarsh Ram secured fifth place, while defending bronze medalist Tejaswin Shankar withdrew early in the competition.

Sharmila Dhankar brought more joy to Indian fans by winning gold in the women's shot put F57 category. She threw a season-best 9.81 metres to beat Ghana's Zinabu Issah. Shilpa Shyla added a bronze in the same event. These victories push India's total medal count to ten at these games.
