Twin explosions in Punjab trigger national security concerns
Punjab police and central intelligence agencies launched a high-level probe after two separate explosions rocked Jalandhar and Amritsar within hours on Tuesday night.Security forces have cordoned off areas around the Border Security Force (BSF) Punjab Frontier headquarters and the Khasa Army cantonment following these suspicious incidents. While no fatalities occurred, the timing and location of these events have put the border state on a high security alert.
Jalandhar Scooter Explosion
Initial reports indicate that a scooter parked near BSF Chowk in Jalandhar erupted into flames around 8:00 PM.Debris from the Honda Activa scattered across the road, damaging a nearby traffic light pole and shattering window panes of adjacent buildings. The vehicle owner, identified as 22-year-old delivery agent Gurpreet Singh, sustained minor injuries.Although local police initially described the event as a vehicle fire, forensic teams and bomb disposal squads are examining the site for explosive residues. This incident is particularly sensitive as Punjab remains a frontline state in India’s national security framework, frequently dealing with cross-border drone activity and smuggling attempts from Pakistan.
Amritsar Cantonment Incident
Hours after the Jalandhar scare, a second low-intensity explosion was reported near the Khasa cantonment area in Amritsar, approximately 15 kilometers from the Attari-Wagah border.Preliminary findings suggest an unknown object was hurled at a boundary wall, causing a portion of a tin sheet to collapse. Amritsar Rural SP Aditya Warrier confirmed that forensic experts are analyzing samples from the scene to determine the nature of the device used.
Investigation and Claims
State authorities are currently verifying a social media post where a group calling itself the Khalistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the acts. Police are also looking into potential links involving cross-border gangsters. These events occur just as Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was scheduled to visit Jalandhar for a public event, adding a layer of political urgency to the security response.Opposition leaders have called for a rigorous review of intelligence protocols to prevent further lapses in public safety.
