India commemorated the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel with a major national celebration at the Statue of Unity in Gujarat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the event, observed as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day), to honour the legacy of the nation's first Home Minister and his pivotal role in integrating the princely states.
The Prime Minister arrived at the iconic 182-metre statue in Ekta Nagar early on Friday morning to pay floral tributes to the statesman affectionately known as the "Iron Man of India." Following this solemn homage, he administered the National Unity Pledge to the assembled attendees and the nation, reinforcing the principles of solidarity and integrity that Sardar Patel championed.
A central feature of the day’s proceedings was the Ekta Diwas Samaroh, a grand parade showcasing the country's disciplined forces and cultural diversity. In a significant display of progress, the parade’s main contingents, including the Guard of Honour and flag march, were led entirely by women officers. The event featured participation from various police forces, Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), and the National Cadet Corps (NCC). The parade was a dynamic spectacle, with special performances including a women’s weapon drill, martial arts displays, and daring motorcycle stunts.
Tableaux representing different states and the armed forces highlighted the nation's rich heritage, complemented by performances from school bands. The Ministry of Culture organised a cultural segment, and the celebration was set to conclude with an impressive air show by the Indian Air Force.
In a message commemorating the occasion, Prime Minister Modi described Sardar Patel as the driving force behind India’s integration during its formative years. He highlighted that Patel’s unwavering commitment to national unity, effective governance, and public service continues to be a profound source of inspiration. The Prime Minister also reaffirmed the collective resolve to build the united, strong, and self-reliant India that Sardar Patel envisioned. On the eve of the event, Mr. Modi had also met with the family members of Sardar Patel, including his grandson, Gautam Patel, in Kevadia.
