New Delhi, July 18:Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and several political leaders on Saturday condoled the death of Chennamma, wife of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, who passed away after a prolonged illness at a private hospital in Bengaluru.

Prime Minister Modi spoke to Deve Gowda to express his condolences. In a post on X, he said Chennamma would be remembered for her humility and commitment to serving society, while extending his sympathies to the former Prime Minister and his family.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge described Chennamma as the "quiet strength" of the Gowda family and recalled his long personal association with Deve Gowda. He praised her unwavering faith, grace and dedication, saying her life reflected silent sacrifice and steadfast commitment. Kharge prayed for strength for the bereaved family to cope with the irreparable loss.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also expressed deep sorrow, calling Chennamma a pillar of strength who stood firmly beside Deve Gowda throughout his political journey while managing family responsibilities with courage and dignity. He said she remained humble and warm despite being the spouse of a former Prime Minister.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara paid tribute to Chennamma, describing her as a constant source of support for Deve Gowda throughout his public life. He prayed for eternal peace for the departed soul and strength for the grieving family.

Leaders across party lines remembered Chennamma for her simplicity, devotion to family, and unwavering support to the former Prime Minister, offering heartfelt condolences to the Gowda family.
