PM Modi deepens New Zealand ties during Auckland summit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently engaged in high-level discussions with his counterpart Christopher Luxon in Auckland. This meeting marks his first official Auckland visit as well as a historic New Zealand tour. Before initiating their formal dialogue on India-New Zealand bilateral relations, officials greeted Modi with a traditional Guard of Honour at Government House. These current engagements follow a recent Free Trade Agreement signed in April, designed to eliminate tariffs and boost economic growth. Later today, Modi will connect with influential corporate leaders, prominent sports figures, and community members.

Building On Decades Of Shared History

For historical context, this diplomatic mission represents the first time an Indian premier has stepped on New Zealand soil since Rajiv Gandhi visited 40 years ago in 1986. Modi expressed gratitude on social media platform X, thanking Luxon for personally welcoming him at the airport upon his Friday arrival. Both leaders previously connected in New Delhi during March 2025, establishing early momentum for their current agenda. Through their renewed talks, officials aim to expand trade avenues, improve regional defense frameworks, and enhance educational exchanges.

Before arriving, Modi concluded successful negotiations in Australia with Anthony Albanese. Their summit in Melbourne yielded significant pacts focused on securing critical mineral supply chains, advancing clean energy transitions, and reinforcing Indo-Pacific security architectures. Moving forward, his New Zealand engagements will likely catalyse further economic integration. Connecting with the local Indian diaspora remains a key priority, highlighting robust connections between both nations.
