Petroleum Ministry to Double Supply of 5kg FTL Cylinders for Migrant Workers

New Delhi, April 7: The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has instructed state governments and union territories to increase the daily supply of 5kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders for migrant workers. This decision follows an assessment of daily LPG distribution, which exceeded the 20% limit set in a previous communication on March 21, 2026.

In a directive to Chief Secretaries, Neeraj Mittal, Secretary of the Ministry, emphasized that these additional cylinders will be distributed exclusively to migrant labourers in collaboration with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs). The goal of this initiative is to improve access to cooking fuel for migrant workers during periods of high demand. State governments, along with their Food/Civil Supplies Departments, will oversee the distribution to ensure the extra cylinders reach the right beneficiaries effectively.

Meanwhile, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, addressed concerns over the ongoing crisis in West Asia, reassuring the public that there is no LPG shortage in India. She confirmed that no "dryouts" have been reported at petrol stations across the country. Furthermore, 6,500 tonnes of commercial LPG were sold yesterday to meet the ongoing fuel demand. Speaking at an Inter-Ministerial briefing on the West Asia crisis, Sharma highlighted that all petrol stations are operating as usual. Additionally, oil marketing companies have conducted 1,300 awareness camps to inform consumers about the availability of 5kg cylinders, during which 10,005 cylinders were sold.

"There's no dryout in LPG supply or at petrol pumps... All petrol pumps are functioning normally. 6,500 tonnes of commercial LPG were sold yesterday. Over 1,300 awareness camps have been held, selling a total of 10,005 cylinders. These camps aim to educate consumers about the availability of 5kg cylinders," Sharma said.

Earlier, a high-level review meeting, chaired by Neeraj Mittal, focused on ensuring the continued, adequate supply of LPG across the nation. States were instructed to prioritize LPG distribution for domestic and essential uses while keeping strict checks on hoarding, diversion, and misinformation. In response to concerns over Free Trade LPG (FTL) supplies for migrant workers, state officials clarified that there has been no disruption in LPG supply for migrants, with stable distribution continuing.

The Secretary also suggested that states might consider targeting specific distribution of 5kg FTL cylinders based on local demand in coordination with OMCs. According to the Ministry, the national LPG supply remains stable and under control, with positive indicators of improving distribution.

Since March 23, 2026, about 6.75 lakh 5kg FTL cylinders have been sold nationwide. Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) OMCs have organized around 550 awareness camps, selling more than 6,700 cylinders. No dryouts have been reported at any LPG distributorship, and online LPG bookings have surged to approximately 97%. Additionally, 90% of deliveries now feature the Delivery Authentication Code (DAC) to prevent cylinder diversion.

Domestic LPG deliveries are running smoothly, with over 18 crore cylinders delivered to households since March 1, 2026. Officials reiterated that the LPG supply situation is stable and encouraged the public to disregard rumors or misinformation about shortages.
