Bhubaneswar, June 27: Tension erupted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar, on Saturday after a doctor was allegedly assaulted by the relatives of a deceased patient who accused the hospital of medical negligence.
According to reports, the deceased, identified as Shibashankar Behera from Ogalapada in Khordha district's Janla area, had been admitted to the hospital three days ago in a critical condition after allegedly consuming poison. He died during treatment on Saturday morning.
Following his death, Behera's family members and several local residents alleged that negligence in medical treatment had led to his demise. The situation soon turned tense as an agitated group confronted hospital staff and allegedly attacked a doctor on duty, triggering unrest within the hospital premises.
After receiving information about the incident, personnel from Khandagiri Police Station rushed to the hospital and brought the situation under control. Several individuals allegedly involved in the assault and disturbance were detained and taken to the police station for questioning.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. The Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Khandagiri Police Station stated that appropriate legal action would be taken against those found responsible for the assault and the ensuing violence.
