Mercury levels expected to dip significantly across most districts soon
Winter conditions in the state are set to intensify as the Regional Meteorological Centre issued a fresh forecast indicating a noticeable dip in mercury levels. Residents across Odisha should prepare for colder nights, with the latest reports suggesting a downward trend in minimum temperatures over the coming days.
According to the most recent bulletin from IMD Bhubaneswar, night temperatures (minimum temperature) are very likely to fall by 2-3°C across the districts of Odisha during the next three days. Following this initial drop, the mercury is expected to stabilize with no large changes predicted thereafter. This shift signals a return of the winter chill after a brief period of fluctuating temperatures.
Current weather observations highlight the onset of this cooling trend. Daringbadi, often called the Kashmir of Odisha, recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the hill stations at 6.5°C. Meanwhile, in the plains, Phulbani shivered at 7.0°C while Parlakhemundi had maximum of 28.6°C. The capital city, Bhubaneswar, reported a maximum temperature of 27.5°C and a minimum of 15.7°C, while Cuttack recorded a minimum of 14.4°C.
Fog continues to affect visibility in specific pockets of the state. Moderate fog reduced visibility to between 200 and 500 meters in Phulbani, while Bhawanipatna experienced shallow fog. Despite the drop in temperature, the overall forecast remains calm.
Looking ahead, the meteorological centre predicts dry weather will prevail over all districts of Odisha for the next seven days, valid up to the morning of January 18, 2026. There are no specific weather warnings issued for this period, ensuring a dry but crisp week ahead for the state.
