Odisha Govt approves ₹222.20 crore project to tackle flooding in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar, July 16:The Odisha government has approved a ₹222.20-crore project to provide a long-term solution to urban flooding and waterlogging in Bhubaneswar. The decision was taken at the first 2026-27 meeting of the State Executive Committee (SEC) on Disaster Management, chaired by Chief Secretary Anu Garg.

The project, supported by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), includes upgrading stormwater drainage, restoring and connecting lakes, promoting rainwater harvesting, strengthening water security, installing early warning systems, and improving urban flood management. The Centre will contribute ₹200 crore, while the state will provide ₹22.20 crore.

The SEC also approved a ₹1.77-crore heatwave mitigation project for Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, which includes rest shelters, cooling measures at bus stops, reflective roof painting, and drinking water facilities.

Additionally, the committee approved measures to strengthen disaster preparedness by enhancing emergency communication systems, forming volunteer task forces in 3,000 villages, and expanding awareness campaigns on snakebite and lightning safety. Chief Secretary Anu Garg directed all departments to ensure timely execution of the approved projects and transparent use of funds.
