Bhubaneswar, April 6: The Food Supplies & Consumer Welfare Department of the Odisha government has issued detailed guidelines to streamline LPG distribution, with a special focus on ensuring the availability of 5kg Free Trade LPG (FTL) cylinders for migrant workers and students.
Principal Secretary Sanjay Kumar Singh, in a press conference held at Lok Seva Bhawan, clarified several misconceptions about the distribution of 5kg cylinders. He explained that individuals could obtain these cylinders from authorised distributors by simply presenting a valid identity proof, without the need for address verification. To further ease access, Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are organising special camps at various locations to facilitate on-the-spot connections.
Singh also highlighted that restrictions apply only to illegal vendors to ensure public safety, stressing that the department is actively taking action against unauthorised sellers.
Regarding the overall fuel situation, the Principal Secretary reassured the public that there is no shortage of LPG, petrol, or diesel. He confirmed that domestic gas supplies remain stable, while commercial gas distribution is gradually returning to normal, with 70% of the supply already restored. To support critical services, 20% of the commercial supply is being prioritised for institutions such as hospitals, schools, hostels, and Ahaar Kendras.
District Collectors have been tasked with leading specialised committees to oversee the situation locally and resolve any logistical challenges swiftly. Additionally, the department has ramped up enforcement efforts to combat black marketing and illegal hoarding. Inspections at 1,633 locations have led to the seizure of 3,105 cylinders and the filing of 288 cases.
To ensure transparency, citizens have been encouraged to use digital platforms for gas bookings. OMCs have assured that adequate stock is maintained at dealers and distributors to meet demand.
