Bhubaneswar, June 25:The death toll among Odia migrant workers affected by the ammonia gas leak incident in Tamil Nadu has climbed to 10, following the deaths of two more women who were undergoing treatment for severe injuries.
According to reports, Deepanjali Juang, a resident of Talaraidiha village under the Banspal block of Keonjhar district, succumbed to her injuries at a hospital on Wednesday evening. Earlier in the day, Rita Juang from Tangiri Dubanali Sahi under the Telkoi police limits also lost her battle for life while receiving medical care.
With these latest casualties, the number of Odia workers killed in the industrial accident has increased from eight to ten.
The victims who had previously died in the incident were identified as Shibani and Gita from Tangiri village under Telkoi police limits; Gumani and Jamini from Rangamatia village; Phulamani and Sajani from Kodipasa under Banspal block; Champabati from Talachampei village; and Subasi Juang from the Kantal area under Harichandanpur block.
Most of the deceased belonged to the Juang tribal community of Keonjhar district and had migrated to Tamil Nadu in search of employment opportunities.
The tragic incident has raised serious concerns about industrial safety standards and the welfare of migrant workers engaged in hazardous industries. Authorities in Tamil Nadu are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the ammonia gas leak.
Meanwhile, the tragedy has left several villages in Keonjhar district mourning the loss of their loved ones, with affected families seeking answers, assistance, and justice in the aftermath of the disaster.
