Odisha death toll in Tamil Nadu Gas Leak climbs to 12 as Angul woman succumbs

Angul, June 27: The death toll of Odia migrant workers in the ammonia gas leak at a seafood processing factory in Tamil Nadu's Tiruvallur district has increased to 12 after a woman from Angul district died while undergoing treatment on Friday.

The deceased, Budhubari Naik of Angul, had been on ventilator support since the gas leak after being exposed to toxic ammonia fumes at the factory. She succumbed to her injuries during treatment.

According to the Odisha Labour Department, four Odia workers who were injured in the incident have recovered and have been discharged from the hospital. They are returning to Odisha by train along with 58 other migrant workers employed at the same seafood processing unit.

Officials said the bodies of the 11 Juang women from Keonjhar district, who lost their lives in the tragedy, have already been handed over to their families. After the completion of post-mortem formalities, Budhubari Naik's body will also be brought back to Odisha.

The Labour Department is coordinating with the Tamil Nadu government to facilitate the transportation of the body to her native place.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Odisha government has announced an ex gratia of ₹10 lakh each for the next of kin of all the deceased migrant workers.

The ammonia gas leak at the seafood processing factory in Tiruvallur district exposed several workers to toxic fumes, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries. The majority of those affected were migrant workers from Odisha.
