Odisha Cabinet approves overhaul of transport and traffic cadre rules

Bhubaneswar, Ap 23: The Odisha government has decided to revamp the Transport and Traffic Cadre Rules, 2013, following extensive amendments. The move introduces a new cadre framework and makes necessary changes to the recruitment process and service conditions of officers in the Transport and Commerce Department.

Under the 2013 rules, the traffic cadre included positions such as Traffic Constable, Assistant Sub-Inspector, Sub-Inspector, Inspector, and Deputy Superintendent (Traffic). Traffic constables were directly recruited by the Odisha Subordinate Staff Selection Commission, which has now been replaced by the Odisha Uniformed Services Staff Selection Commission (OUSSSC).

A 2021 amendment incorporated running efficiency tests into the recruitment process for Traffic Constables and Sub-Inspectors. In 2022, 26 ASI posts were removed, and new positions were created, including 1 Joint Commissioner, 3 Deputy Commissioners, 2 Deputy Superintendents (Traffic), and 5 Sub-Inspectors.

The newly approved cadre rules will permanently update the recruitment and service structure for various ranks in the department. The Odisha Cabinet has approved measures to modernize the traffic enforcement framework and streamline promotions and appointments across the state.
