Odisha Board to introduce digital evaluation for matric exams; pilot to begin with supplementary tests

Cuttack, Jul 7: The Board of Secondary Education (BSE), Odisha, is set to introduce digital on-screen evaluation for the upcoming Matric examinations. As part of the transition, the Board will conduct a pilot project by digitally evaluating answer scripts of the ongoing Matric Supplementary Examination and the State Open School Certificate (SOSC) Examination.

Under the new system, evaluators will no longer use red ink to mark answer scripts manually. Instead, the scanned answer sheets will be assessed digitally on laptop screens, with teachers using a mouse to mark responses and award marks through an on-screen evaluation platform.

The Board has already begun preparations for implementing the digital evaluation system. The pilot assessment will be conducted at three centres across the state-Sambalpur, Bhubaneswar, and Cuttack.

As the supplementary examinations are scheduled to conclude on July 10, the Board aims to begin the digital evaluation process around July 19. Since this is the first time digital evaluation is being introduced for the Matric Supplementary Examination, the Board will organise a special training programme for evaluators before the assessment begins.

Around 400 teachers will participate in the two-day training workshop to familiarise themselves with the on-screen evaluation process and the digital marking software.

The Matric Supplementary and SOSC examinations, which commenced on July 2, will conclude on July 10. Beginning Tuesday, the Board will start collecting answer scripts from the first three days of examinations from all examination centres. The remaining answer sheets, along with those of the SOSC examination, will be collected after the examinations conclude and are expected to reach the Board headquarters by July 12.

Once all answer scripts are received, they will be scanned and uploaded to the digital evaluation system, enabling trained evaluators to assess them online. The initiative is expected to improve the speed, accuracy, and transparency of the evaluation process and pave the way for full-scale implementation of digital assessment in future Matric examinations.
