No Priests, No Fire, No Dowry: Unique Mass Marriage Held in Odisha’s Bargarh

Bhubaneswar, April 12: In a remarkable event held on the 199th birth anniversary of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, the Ambedkar Charitable Trust organized an extraordinary mass marriage in Bargarh. What made this ceremony stand out was its simplicity and modern approach—there were no priests, no fire rituals, and no traditional ceremonies, according to the organizers.

This progressive initiative focused on celebrating love without caste barriers or dowry demands. The marriages were solemnized in a simple yet dignified manner, with couples exchanging floral garlands instead of indulging in elaborate rituals.

Seven couples participated in this unique event, each one excited to embark on a new chapter of their lives together. Speaking about the experience, one of the brides shared, “Today, we had a mass marriage where only garlands were exchanged, without any dowry. This is truly a blessing for the less fortunate, as there’s no burden of dowry. We’ve pledged to live happily for life.”

The event, held at the Town Hall, is part of a tradition that has been celebrated for the past 20 years, said the organizer. “People from all religions, castes, and social backgrounds come together for this ceremony. There is no dowry demand, no lavish feasts, alcohol, or unnecessary expenses. This mass marriage is free from all worries, and its sole focus is on ensuring a joyful life for the newlyweds,” the organizer added.

The ceremony stands as a testimony to the values of equality, simplicity, and social progress, paving the way for a future where weddings are celebrated without the weight of tradition and social pressures.
