NHRC Seeks Odisha Govt Report on Tribal Woman's Electrocution Death in Koraput

Bhubaneswar, July 22: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report from the Odisha government over the electrocution death of a tribal woman in Koraput district, citing alleged negligence in maintaining a high-voltage power line.

Acting on a complaint by human rights activist and advocate Anup Patra, the NHRC directed the chief secretary to submit a report within two weeks. The complaint alleged that Saraswati Prepeka of Badarshankha village died on January 28 after coming into contact with a dangerously low-hanging 33 kV power line despite repeated warnings from villagers.

The complainant claimed similar incidents had occurred earlier at the same spot and sought a high-level inquiry, enhanced compensation for the victim's family, action against responsible officials, and a safety audit of high-tension power lines across Koraput.

Taking cognisance of the matter, the NHRC asked Odisha government to take necessary action and submit its report within the stipulated time.Bottom of Form
