Thousands mourn in Najaf as Ali Khamenei heads home

Mourners carried the body of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei into Najaf's revered Imam Ali shrine on Wednesday. This solemn event marks the fifth day of state mourning following his death in a joint US-Israeli strike earlier this year. Authorities scheduled the final burial for Thursday morning in the Iranian city of Mashhad. For centuries, Najaf has served as a central spiritual hub for Shia Muslims worldwide, making this specific route highly symbolic for Iranian leadership.

Officials, including Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and eldest son Mostafa Hosseini Khamenei, received the casket at Najaf airport late Tuesday night. Iraq declared a public holiday to honour the occasion. The wooden casket, heavily draped in the national Iranian flag, was carried through busy roads. Crowds lined these streets, waving both Iranian and Iraqi flags alongside banners of local militias. After ceremonies finish in Najaf, the procession will travel north to Karbala, located approximately sixty kilometres away. Devotees will gather there at the shrines of Imam Hussein and Abbas before returning the body to Iran.

Diplomatic Ties Collapse

Political tensions continue to boil outside these religious ceremonies. US President Donald Trump announced today that a recent ceasefire agreement with Tehran is completely over. Speaking to journalists at a NATO summit in Turkey, he stated he no longer wants to engage in diplomatic talks. He called dealing with the current regime a total waste of time. This sudden breakdown collapses a fourteen-point memorandum of understanding signed last month to pause hostilities and discuss nuclear programmes.

Leadership Changes inside Tehran

Security fears have disrupted normal protocols for the new supreme leader. Mojtaba Khamenei, recently appointed to succeed his father, is entirely skipping the six-day public mourning events. Reports indicate he remains heavily guarded in Tehran due to ongoing assassination threats from Israel.

Iran’s First Vice President Reza Aref praised the Iraqi government for hosting the events. He noted that such cooperation highlights deep cultural and religious bonds between the two nations. The region now faces fresh uncertainty as diplomatic channels abruptly close and military postures harden on all sides today across international borders.
