Mortal Remains of Two Indian Mariners Killed In US MT Settebello Attack Finally Reach Home

Repatriated bodies of Indian mariners arrive following US strikes

Officials from Indian diplomatic missions have successfully facilitated the return of two deceased mariners. Aditya Sharma and Shivanand Chaurasiya tragically lost their lives during recent US military strikes on the commercial vessel MT Settebello. Indian authorities officially confirmed their repatriation from Oman early Wednesday morning.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar formally protested these lethal maritime actions. He spoke directly with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to condemn the military targeting of commercial shipping. Indian diplomats in New Delhi also summoned Jason Meeks, the US Charge d'Affaires, to record their strong objections to the incident. Last week, US forces fired upon the merchant ship over alleged violations of an ongoing naval blockade against Iranian ports. The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical chokepoint for global oil shipments, making any military blockade highly destabilizing for international markets. Out of 24 Indian crew members on board, rescue teams managed to save 21 individuals, but three sadly perished in the crossfire.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly addressed this escalating maritime crisis at the G7 Summit in Evian. He expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of civilian lives. He warned global leaders about the severe economic fallout resulting from continued trade disruptions in West Asia. He urged international partners to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy over armed conflict. Protecting innocent seafarers must remain a collective global responsibility to keep critical supply chains running smoothly. India stands ready to cooperate with all nations to secure these vital sea routes.

Grieving relatives received the mortal remains of their loved ones after days of agonizing uncertainty. Diplomatic staff expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families as they navigate this difficult period. Government officials promised full support for the survivors recovering from the trauma.
