Modi and Carney advance economic ties at G7
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney agreed to finalize the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) by the end of 2026 during a crucial bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Evian, France. This interaction marks their fourth discussion in less than a year, reflecting a shared desire to stabilize and build upon the positive trajectory of India-Canada relations following Carney’s visit to India in March.
Securing Energy and Defence Pacts
Both leaders emphasized creating resilient supply chains to guard global food markets and clean energy systems. Discussions centered heavily on commercial arrangements involving liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and metallurgical coal. These energy resources remain central to India's domestic growth.
Security cooperation also received a substantial boost in Evian. The two prime ministers announced the launch of formal negotiations for a General Security of Information Agreement (GSOIA) to protect shared intelligence. Additionally, they introduced "Raisina Americas," an innovative institutional framework structured to foster deeper policy debate and diplomatic exchange between the two democracies.
Strengthening Talent and Trade Pathways
Economic interactions will accelerate later this year when Canada sends a high-level trade mission to India, following Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal's successful trip to Canada last month. Modi also expressed gratitude to Carney for an invitation to pay an official visit to Canada later in 2026. Bilateral talks concluded with an agreement to expand joint work under the Canada-India Talent and Innovation Strategy, which boosts educational tie-ups and high-tech skill development.
