Malkangiri, July 22: A long-awaited dream of the people of Malkangiri came true on Wednesday as an aircraft successfully completed its trial landing and take-off at the district airport, paving the way for regular commercial air services under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme.

The successful trial marks a major milestone in improving air connectivity for one of Odisha's most remote districts and brings scheduled flights a step closer to reality.

Senior district and aviation officials were present to witness the historic moment. Extensive day-and-night security inspections were carried out ahead of the trial to ensure the airport met all safety standards. Among those present were Assistant Director (Security) Manoj Kumar Das, Assistant Director (Aero Safeguard) Neeraj Kumaran Nayak, Additional District Magistrate Bedabar Pradhan, Superintendent of Police Vinod Patil, District Forest Officer Sai Kiran, Sub-Collector Duryodhan Bhoi and other senior officials.

Officials said the airport's existing 1,600-metre runway will soon be extended to 3,000 metres as part of the Odisha government's plan to develop Malkangiri into a full-fledged regional aviation hub under the UDAN scheme.

Regular flight operations are expected to begin within the next 30 days using 9-seater aircraft. The initial service will connect Malkangiri to Bhubaneswar via Jeypore, with a brief 25-minute stop in Jeypore for refuelling. Authorities also plan to expand the network in the future by introducing flights to Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The launch of air services is expected to significantly improve access to education, healthcare and business opportunities for residents of Malkangiri. Officials believe enhanced connectivity will accelerate economic growth and strengthen the district's integration with the rest of Odisha and neighbouring states.

The successful trial flight has generated excitement and optimism across the district, marking the beginning of a new era of development and connectivity for Malkangiri.
