Lucknow Slum Blaze Destroys 280 Shanties Leaving Over 1000 Residents Homeless

Blaze in Lucknow displaces hundreds of migrant families.

More than 1,000 people were forced into the streets Wednesday evening after a fast-moving fire leveled 280 shanties in the Vikas Nagar area of Lucknow. The incident, which began around 5:30 PM in Sector 11, turned a densely packed settlement of migrant workers into a landscape of ash within three hours. Witnesses reported a terrifying sequence of over 50 LPG cylinder explosions that accelerated the destruction and sent thick black smoke billowing across the city skyline.

Emergency Response and Evacuation

First responders from the fire department, NDRF, and SDRF coordinated a large-scale operation to prevent the flames from jumping to permanent residential structures. While 20 fire tenders battled the main inferno, police evacuated approximately 20 nearby houses as a safety precaution. Despite the scale of property loss, Lucknow Police Commissioner Amrendra Sengar confirmed that no human lives were lost in the disaster.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath took immediate cognizance of the tragedy, ordering district officials to expedite relief measures and provide medical aid. Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also monitored the situation, ensuring that displaced families were moved to temporary shelters known as Rain Baseras.

Lucknow’s rapid urban expansion has frequently led to the formation of makeshift colonies on vacant government land, such as this site belonging to the Awas Vikas Parishad, where migrant laborers from Sitapur, Barabanki, and Assam provide essential services to the city’s economy.

Effect on Vulnerable Families

Survivors, many of whom work as drivers and domestic helps, reported losing life savings and essential identification documents in the blaze. Local authorities have started distributing food and clothing while a formal investigation into a suspected short circuit continues.
